Monstrosities features 50 Drum Rack kits made from 800 samples, with fierce kicks and snares, raging percussion and cymbals, and a huge arsenal of hits, strikes, roars and blasts. The sounds in this pack originate from a wide range of unusual field recordings, studio experiments and digital deviations.

Built To Destroy

Monstrosities provides an extensive variety of kits to choose from. Every Drum Rack is composed of 16 powerful sounds, sculpted to form a unique kit with all of the vital sounds needed to start making destructive beats immediately. The kits are designed so that you can easily switch them out while keeping the same MIDI pattern – the drum positions and structure remain, but the sound changes dramatically. Each kit also comes with an inspiring Live clip that shows off its potential.

Sound Variety

The samples in Monstrosities come from drum kits ranging in condition from pristine to total junk, an array of found objects, old computer parts, broken instruments, appliances doing things they were not intended to, balls bouncing against surfaces, and just about anything else that makes a unique sound when hit.

In addition, a whole lot of drum synthesis and mangling effects from a variety of Max patches went into the making of Monstrosities. While some of the sounds were captured with a traditional drum recording setup, the majority were conceived with field recorders, contact mics, portable recording rigs and experimental mic placements.

For Use With Push

When using Push, each Monstrosities kit is fully contained within the 16 pads on the lower left portion of the controller. This allows all of the drum elements to be accessed while using the rest of the Push for sequencing and arranging. The drum mapping and macro control assignments are consistent throughout the kits, thus making switching kits seamless. The macros can also easily be automated by the Push drum sequencer for more dynamic and expressive patterns.

Vocalisms is a collection of 58 drum kits made solely from sounds produced by the human voice and mouth. Taking advantage of the entire oral spectrum, this Pack focuses on the voice as a percussive instrument and provides all the elements of a drum kit, and much more.

Vocalisms is a drum library for those who want something different. Taking the vast variety of sounds that the human voice is capable of, Vocalisms transforms these into an impressive range of vocal percussion: beatbox, shouts, buzzes, chirps, hard consonants, exaggerated vowels, phonetic variants and plenty of experimentation. Each kit of 16 samples includes standard drums such as kicks, snares, hi-hats, cymbals and toms, as well as melodic elements such as bass lip buzzes, tonal hits and other sung one shots.

The sounds in Vocalisms are 100% "orally originated", meaning that no non-vocal sounds were used. Even if it doesn't always sound like it, the human voice is the only sound source. Along with basic techniques such as layering, compression and pitch modification, various non-conventional methods of processing were also applied to the samples in order to provide an even broader palette of sounds.

Vocalisms includes 58 Drum Rack kits. Each kit has its own Live Clip and complementary MIDI pattern. Switching between kits is seamless as both the drum mapping and macro controls are consistent among the kits – perfect for use with Push.

Vocalisms contains four kit categories:

Advocal Kits - These dry and tight kits feature mostly classic beatbox sounds with only a few experimental elements.

Evocal Kits - The sounds in these kits are highly processed, each one with its own unique style of production.

Havocal Kits - The sounds in these kits tend towards the aggressive end of the spectrum, either through extreme processing or by the nature of the sounds themselves.

A selection of mystical percussion sounds created from found objects, hit, bowed and pinched virtuosically by a leading percussionist and recorded with meticulous and intimate intensity on our dry stage in London's Kings Cross.



Each sound has been exhaustively investigated, deep sampled, and played to its strengths (different beaters, flicks, bows and pinches) to give you the most musical and mystical results.

Whilst the materials have a raw beauty unto themselves we have also worked tirelessly to create the many presets, some simple and some warped beyond recognition, to demonstrate how these magical sounds can be used.

A highlight of the library is a selection of sequenced rhythms that interact with eDNA to create up-to-the-minute pulsing tension beds and mystical atmospheres.



BACKGROUND

One of the many things we struggle with as composers is the sonic stereotype associated with certain recognisable instruments. The posh sounding harp, the meaningful piano, the sad cello. The nursery horror of a celeste, or the fact that you can't use a marimba without being accused of aping American Beauty or Badlands. We're always striving here at Spitfire to match the sonic characteristics of known instruments with those of lesser known (or indeed invented) so that the same effect can be achieved sans stereotype!

For many years Christian and the Spitfire team have been close sampling resonant glass, metal and china objects. Glass and Steel is a compilation of their efforts; a thesis if you will.

Whilst the idea of using non-tuned found sounds, items from the kitchen cupboards, objects found in thrift stores around London conjure up calamitous, catastrophic and fun compositions along the lines of the love trash act Stomp. Glass and Steel is actually an exemplary study on the power of instruments recorded under the microscope at minute levels, where the harmonics weave spells and the subtones throb. It is a truly beautiful and mystical affair that has found its ways onto scores as far reaching as emotional thrillers, detective procedurals, science fiction, fantasy, horrors right along to factual entertainment.

Composers and members of the Spitfire family who have these in their arsenal often claim they're a "get out of jail" card.
